James Gilman Promoted to Brigadier General  Rose-Hulman alumnus James Gilman ('74) has been promoted from colonel to brigadier general in the United States Army. Gilman at work at Walter Reed Hospital Gilman is also the new commander of the Brooke AMC and the Great Plains Regional Medical Command in San Antonio, Texas. For the past year, he served as the commander of the Walter Reed Health Care System (WRHCS). During the change of command in June at WRHCS, Gilman was praised by Major General Kenneth Farmer, commander of the North Atlantic Regional Medical Command. In a story on the WRHCS Web site, Farmer said Gilman has led "this command absolutely superbly. Farmer said Gilman improved patient safety and the business side of the operations with an emphasis on data quality and accountability. Gilman received a bachelor of science degree in biological engineering from Rose-Hulman. In 1994, Rose-Hulman presented him with a Distinguished Young Alumnus Award. He earned his medical degree from the Indiana University School of Medicine. He is a graduate of the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, Fort Leavenworth, Kan., and the U.S. Army War College, Carlisle Barracks, Pa. He previously served as Director, Health Policy and Services Directorate, Office of the Surgeon General.
