Rose-Hulman Students Once Again Win State Civil Engineering Design Contest

A project to create a wetlands area for Ducks Unlimited Inc. in northwestern South Dakota has helped four senior Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology civil engineering students earn top honors in a state student design competition.

This marks the seventh time in the past eight years that Rose-Hulman has won the competition, sponsored by the Indiana section of the American Society of Civil Engineers. The award was presented at the ASCE's spring meeting in Indianapolis.

Ducks Unlimited's Great Plains Office (Bismarck, N.D.) asked the Rose-Hulman students to prepare a comprehensive study for the creation of wetlands for wildlife use at a privately-owned ranch located in Perkins County, South Dakota. The project site is approximately 280 acres of undeveloped prairie grassland. The project included site selection for a dam and spillways, watershed modeling, dam design, outlet structure design, an overall site plan and an estimation of construction costs.

Work on the students' ideas is scheduled to begin this summer. Members of the winning team were Jessica Huggins of New Brighton, Pa.; Terra Baranowski of Noblesville, Ind.; Tarelle Osborn of Lynden, Wash.; and Christopher Bauer of Terre Haute. Bob Houghtalen organizes the Civil Engineering Department's design program.

Other civil engineering senior design projects completed this year included a rehabilitation plan for Clay City's downtown business district; designing a dining hall at the Friendly Benwood Community Christian Youth Camp in Clay County; analysis of the Bridgeton Mill in Parke County; designing youth soccer fields in Linton; developing a master plan for Indianapolis' Cathedral High School; and conducting a study of the Ranney Well in West Lafayette.
