Nickol Earns Top Prize in Schmidt Freshman Mathematics Contest

Mechanical engineering student Jeremy Nickol earned first-place honors in the 20th Alfred R. Schmidt Freshman Mathematics Competition at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. Awards were presented on Oct. 4 during the Department of Mathematics’ homecoming and Friends of Schmidt receptions.

Nickol, from Solon, Ohio, had the most correct answers out of six problems in the two-hour exam, administered Sept. 16 on campus. He received a book, a copy of Math Horizons magazine and $20.

Tying for second place were Andrew Bomar, a mechanical engineering major from Big Rapids, Mich.; Ryan Davis, a chemical engineering major from Gallatin, Tenn.; and Yuejun Zhu, electrical engineering major Shanghai, China. They each received a book, copy of Math Horizons and $10.

Third place was award to Tim Ekl, a computer science major from Lake Zurich, Ill.. He received a copy of Math Horizons and $5.

Earning meritorious mention were Matt Buckner, Ching-Chen Ma, Alyssa Ryba, Nathan Shevick and Nathan Young. Honorable mention was given to Luke Mehringer, Melissa Schwenk, Brian Sherman and David Vinson. Kyle Boone also participated in the contest.

The annual competition was started in 1989 to honor Schmidt, 1 1949 Rose-Hulman graduate who served as a mathematics professor at his alma mater from 1949 to 1995.

This eyar’s problems were compiled by Paul Kominers, Scott Kominers and Rose-Hulman Mathematics Professor John Rickert. Grading the test were faculty members Cara Brooks, Kurt Bryan, Joshua Holden, Tanya Jajcay and Rickert. Brooks and Jajcay presented the honors.
