Central Indiana Alumni Committed to ‘Race For The Cure’
Rose-Hulman

A little rain couldn't dampen the spirits of Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology alumni that joined a record number of central Indiana residents in raising money and community awareness for cancer during this year’s Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in Indianapolis –- an event co-chaired by alumnus Tom Miltner (Civil Eng., ’86) and his wife, Pam.

Alumni 'Racers': Members of Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology's team that participated in Indianapolis' Race For The Cure community awareness for cancer included Anne Trueblood, Becky Smith and Carolyn Trueblood.

Alumni, family members and friends were among the 42,000 participants in the 5K run/walk and 1-mile family walk -– making the event the largest for the Komen Breast Cancer Research Program.

Rose-Hulman alumni organized a team for the first time and raised $535 to support cancer screenings and follow-care for underserved women in central Indiana.

“We wanted to do something that could bring all alumni –- young and old, male to female –- together and what better way than to take on the cause of fighting cancer,” cited team organizer Trent Bennett (Civil Eng., ’87), whose mother died from cancer during his junior year at Rose-Hulman.

“Breast cancer is something that touches all people, directly or indirectly, from all walks of life and at an extremely personal level.  This is clearly evident in just the sheer number of people that participate each and every year.”

Other alumni participating in the event were Victoria Bowman (Comp. Science, ’04), Susan (Parks) Clouse (Mech. Eng., ’01), Rosanne Forgione (’00), Sandea Jenison (Chem. Eng., ’04), Tracey (Neal) Lockhart (Mech. Eng., ’02), Jena Ringo (Mech. Eng., ’00), Sarah Sanborn (Chem. Eng., ’04), Nancy Schoonover (Comp. Eng., ‘99), Becky Smith (Chem. Eng., ’99), Anne Trueblood (Mech. Eng., ’03), Tiffany (Blandin) Trusty (Elect. Eng., ’97) and Nathan VanSell (Chem. Eng., ’98).  Other participants were Stacy Bogataj and Donavin Levin.

“When Tom (Miltner) saw that Rose-Hulman had a team, he called me to say how excited and proud he was to see his alma mater participating,” reported Bennett, pointing out that Pam Miltner spent hundreds of hours organizing, managing and motivating hundreds of volunteers to make this year’s Race For The Cure an overwhelming success.

More Rose-Hulman alumni are planning to participate in Indianapolis’ Mini-Marathon on May 3 and organize other community events throughout the year.

“I hope there is willingness from our alumni to gather and support other worthwhile community events and charity-related items,” stated Bennett. “As Albert Einstein once said, ‘It is every man’s obligation to put back into the world at least the equivalent of what he takes out of it.’”
