Rose-Hulman

Capturing three of the four grade divisions, Terre Haute South High School won its seventh straight title in Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology’s annual mathematics competition, which attracted over 400 students from 26 schools in four states.

Champions, Again: Students and teachers from Terre Haute South High School celebrated winning the Rose-Hulman Mathematics Competition for the seventh straight year.

In its 41st year, the competition is one of the largest high school math contests in the Midwest.  Besides being administered at Rose-Hulman, the exam was also administered at regionals in Cincinnati, St. Louis and northern Kentucky.  It consists of 20 questions in a wide range of mathematics categories.  The contest is unique in that students compete for individual and team honors in their class divisions.  Then, scores in each class are added to determine the overall school champion.

At Rose-Hulman, Terre Haute South swept top honors in the junior, sophomore and freshman class divisions to outscore second-place Park Tudor High School of Indianapolis by 157 points for the overall school title.  The Signature School, a first-time entrant from Evansville, placed third.

“This is our ‘Super Bowl of Academics’,” stated Terre Haute South mathematics teacher Mae Turner White, who was in her first year as the team’s coach.  “This continues a legacy of championships that we’re very proud to have at Terre Haute South.  Our students work very hard in the classroom to improve their math skills each year.  All of that work is showcased at this competition.”

Individual class champions included Jeffrey Chenhall of Iowa City West (Iowa), who had the only perfect 100-point score in the competition, among seniors; John Zhong of Carmel and Matthew Croop of Indianapolis’ North Central, which tied for top honors among juniors; David Benjamin and Phillip Thomas, both of Lafayette Harrison, tied among sophomores; and Nathan Benjamin of Lafayette Harrison, among freshmen.

Nathan Benjamin and Curie Ahn of Iowa City West received book prizes for being the top freshman male and female students.  The prizes were provided in memory of Sally Shonk, a former Vigo County teacher. David Benjamin and Ashley Nagel of the Nagel Academy received book prizes for being the sophomore male and female finishers.  The prizes and received book prizes in memory of Mary Rhein, a teacher who coordinated the contest in West Chester, Ohio, for several years.  This year's book prizes were "A History of Mathematics," by Victor Katz; "Mathematical Journeys," by Peter Schumer; "Prime Numbers," by David Wells; and "The Art & Craft of Problem Solving," by Paul Zeitz.  The books were provided by Addison Wesley and Wiley Publishers.

The list of participating schools atRose-Hulman included Baptist Academy, Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory, Broad Ripple, Covenant Christian, Lutheran, North Central, Park Tudor and Perry Meridian, all from Indianapolis; Carmel, Castle of Newburgh, Crawfordsville, Fishers, Hamilton Southeastern, Lafayette Harrison, Lafayette Jefferson, North Vermillion, Northview, Signature School, South Vermillion, Terre Haute North and West Vigo. Urbana High School of Illinois, Iowa City West of Iowa and White Station of Memphis, Tenn., joined students from several home school academies in the competition.

Rose-Hulman mathematics professor John Rickert coordinates the contest, with test questions compiled by professor emeritus Herb Bailey.
