Beginning Project Work: Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology juniors Christine Price and Chris Routh (top left) gather with colleagues from Turkey's Bilkent University during a recent visit to
discuss a collaborative international project. |
The ability to work with colleagues from other cultures on international projects is a key asset in today's job market. This is why, two computer science and software engineering students
and a faculty member from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology recently visited Bilkent University in Ankara, Turkey, to begin a collaborative international project. The teams are working with the
International Children's Center to design and develop a software application that will be used to educate and inform children and adults about child rights issues.
Making the trip were Christine Price, a junior software engineering major from Ballwin, Mo., and Chris Routh, a junior computer science major from Muncie, Ind., along with project supervisor
Archana Chidanandan, assistant professor of computer science and software engineering.
When asked about the project, Price told Bilkent University officials said that she believes it provides a unique opportunity to work with a diverse group of people. While working with a
large team, she is hoping to improve her skills in teamwork and division of labor. Routh is excited to work on a project which can have far reaching effects for children around the world. It also
provides an opportunity to learn how to communicate across languages and cultures.
The recent visit has served as a good starting point for students from both sides of the project. Chidanandan believes that, in the future, the students should find it easier to communicate
with each other in spite of the time and cultural differences between students of the project teams.
