Rose-Hulman Part of Valley Effort to Raise
Sustainability Awareness
|

|
"Sustainable Planning, Design and Redevelopment: Terre Haute's Commitment"
is the topic of the opening lecture in a series of discussions to increase
awareness about sustainability in the Wabash Valley by Our Green Valley
Alliance. Pat Martin, chief planner for the City of Terre Haute's
Engineering Office, will lead the discussion on Wednesday, starting at 5
p.m., in Room 103 of Holmstedt Hall on the Indiana State University campus.
The event is free and open to the public.
The alliance is a collaborative effort between Rose-Hulman Institute of
Technology, Indiana State University, St. Mary-of-the-Woods College, Ivy
Tech State College, the city of Terre Haute and Union Hospital that seeks to
increase public awareness about sustainability. Sustainability seeks to
merge the well-being of the world by encouraging responsible use of natural
resources. Sustainable agriculture is about making environmental stewardship
profitable for farmers, which then can lead to prosperous farming
communities.
"The degradation of natural environments presents one of the largest
challenges for technical professionals," states English Professor Richard
House, who joins faculty colleague Mark Minster on the alliance. "Rose-Hulman
recognizes its educational and civic responsibilities on this front: we and
our students need to understand how our expertise can be harnessed to serve
our neighbors and the natural world.
"Rose-Hulman programs are exploring technologies that are crucial for a
sustainable future -- from hybrid drivetrains to biodiesel derived from
algae -- and we continue to work on reducing the environmental impact of our
campus facilities. Success in addressing large problems requires
collaboration, though, and this is a terrific opportunity to work with our
partners throughout the Terre Haute community," House said.
The place of the remaining talks will rotate to each of the schools of
higher education and the city.
While the overall goal of the group is to enhance sustainability, such as
with food systems, in the Wabash Valley, the group also seeks to better
relationships between each of the schools and the city.
Another aspect of the alliance's mission, in addition to providing a forum
for debate on sustaining the environment, is to raise public awareness. It
hopes to do so by the talks and serving as a resource center for
environmentally sustainable practices, education and activities in the
Wabash Valley.
The group's long-term goal is to influence the community to adopt and act
upon long-term sustainability goals. In turn, they hope that will improve
personal and public health, community vitality, economic development and the
environment.
