‘The Power of One’ is Theme of Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Events
Rose-Hulman
Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology and its students are the beneficiaries of the vision that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. had in his famous "I Have A Dream" speech in Washington, D.C., in 1963.  That was the message of award-winning Vigo County educator Katherine Utley in her "A Dream Deferred" speech that was featured on January 18 as the college commemorated the former civil rights leader.

“The Power of One” was the theme of the week's activities that spotlighted campus diversity. The events have been organized by the college’s President’s Office and Diversity Council.

Powerful Message: Katherine Utley, award-winning teacher in the Vigo County School Corporation, presented this year's Martin Luther King Jr. Day Convocation on January 18 at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology's Hatfield Hall Theater.
"The very existence of such ceremonies and observations as this
lets us know that King's dream in alive and well.  Rose-Hulman, which at one time during my lifetime had no students of African American heritage, today not only welcomes but wholeheartedly champions cultural diversity, realizing that the fates of all men and women are inextricably bound," Utley stated.

Utley has spent 41 years teaching Latin and English, primarily at Terre Haute North High School, received an honorary degree from Rose-Hulman in 2002, has attended five National Endowment of the Humanities Summer Seminars and Institutes, and earned several excellence in teaching awards, including Rose-Hulman’s Excellence in Teaching Award, Vigo County Excellence in Teaching Award and WTHI-TV’s Golden Apple Award. She has spoken at several colleges and universities as well as at public assemblies.

A Martin Luther King Jr. Student Leadership Dinner on Wednesday, January 20, will recognize Rose-Hulman student leaders and winners of this year’s MLK Art Competition. Thomas Reives, an engineering management graduate student, will be the keynote speaker. He earned the North American Interfraternity Conference’s 2009 Award of Distinction for his involvement in the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity providing an outlet for developing leadership skills.

The Diversity Council will also present Martin Luther King Jr. Leadership Awards to persons for their promotion and advancement of mutual respect, understanding and appreciation for diversity, contributions toward improving the lives of others, particularly the underserved through leadership and service, and served as a role model within the community and college.

Rose-Hulman is committed to creating a climate which recognizes diversity and the unique contributions that each individual can make to the Rose-Hulman community.
