Largest Class Ever Gets Head Start on College through Fast Track Calculus

Sixty-four freshmen to Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology got off to a quick start on their college careers by successfully completing the Fast Track Calculus mathematics program. The program crams 30 weeks of first-year calculus classes into an accelerated five-week education program (from July 19 to August 20) for outstanding students who have had one year of calculus and analytic geometry in high school.

Problem Solvers: Two members of this year’s Fast Track Calculus program work together to solve a homework problem. The program showcases how students must work in teams to overcome academic challenges at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.

This year’s class is the largest in the history of the program and required four instructors: Elton Graves, associate professor of mathematics; and Michael DeVasher, Steve Galinaitis and Tom Langley, assistant professors of mathematics.

Fast Track Calculus allows students to review differential and integral calculus, cover all of multivariable calculus and become familiar with the computer implementation of mathematics. Students completing the program get 15 academic credit hours (passing the normal freshman calculus courses) and are able to enter sophomore-level mathematics courses as a freshman.
