Doktor Kaboom (actor/comedian David Epley) uses popping and crackling to showcase that science is fun and interesting.

“Science is an adventure, and a mental and physical exploration of the unknown -- gathering information, testing ideas, creatively finding new ways to apply knowledge gained and sharing what we discover with each other,” said Epley in a recent interview. “These are the characteristics of the scientific life. It is incredibly fulfilling at every level.”

The interactive one-man science variety show, suitable for all audiences, blends theatre arts with the wonders of scientific exploration –- combining Epley’s two passions: science and performing. He attended the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics before spending 20 years writing, performing, and directing original interactive comedy across the U.S. and Canada. (Yes, he’s not a doctor, either.)

With Doktor Kaboom, Epley creates an amazing educational tour of the modern scientific method, using humor and comedy while demonstrating spectacular applications of the physical sciences.

“My goal is to remind everyone in the audience that adventure is fun and exciting. I want the young children to experience the wonder of the unexpected in scientific discovery, and I want the adults in their lives to see it again through their children's eyes,” Epley said. “We forget as we grow older that science is truly exciting. We tell ourselves that it is too hard or meant for other people. But the foundations of science are thrilling and are accessible to all. My ultimate goal is to get parents and kids doing some things together at home -- get them off of the couch, turning off the television and building an experiment together.”

Helping put the audience in the mood for good times, Rose-Hulman physics and optical engineering students will have hands-on project demonstrations throughout the Hatfield Hall Theater lobby, from 6-7 p.m.

Also, the Doktor Kaboom show will be presented to more than 1,100 Vigo County School Corporation students on Tuesday. These shows are being sponsored by Terre Haute Savings Bank and Eli Lilly and Company’s Clinton Laboratories.
