Political Science Professor: Indiana Democrats Should Take Note of
Republican's Massachusetts Triumph
|
|

Indiana Sen. Evan Bayh and Rep. Brad Ellsworth may be reconsidering their
strong support for current health care reform legislation, following a
victory by Republican Scott Brown on Tuesday night to represent the expiring
term of former Massachusetts Sen. Ted Kennedy.

Terrence Casey, a political science professor and chair of Rose-Hulman
Institute of Technology's Department of Humanities and Social Sciences,
recently told Terre Haute's WTHI-TV: "The open question on this is how
Democratic leaders are going to interpret this," said Casey in the
interview. "I'm particularly thinking of blue dog Democrats -- Brad
Ellsworth and Evan Bayh -- wanting to step back and say, 'Wait a minute,
this looks troubling to us. This looks politically dangerous. We need to
rethink this.'"

Casey also told WTHI: "Democrats should win Massachusetts elections by a
landslide, and they lost on that. In essence, if they can't win in
Massachusetts, can they really win in Indiana?"
Democrats may take fast action on the health care legislation before Brown
is seated, giving Republicans a key 41st vote in the U.S. Senate. However,
Casey believes, that action is not likely in the current political climate
-- before further mid-term U.S. congressional and senate elections.
"They (Democrats) could delay it or they could conceivable try to push
through the legislation prior to him being seated, but that is a very
politically dangerous move to make because that would really look like the
people of Massachusetts voted, they said they didn't like it, but we're
going to try to push this through before you get your guy seated," Casey
said. "It's an incredibly risky strategy."
Casey is teaching a winter quarter course on Politics of the Global Economy.
He specializes in comparative and international political economy,
comparative politics, globalization, British politics and international
relations.
