Faculty Newsmakers: Applied Biology Professor's Paper Gets
Editor's Choice Award from Science Magazine
|
|
|

Ella Ingram |
A paper on “Life Science Education” written by Applied Biology and Biomedical Engineering Professor Ella Ingram was recently highlighted as the Editor’s Choice for education in Science magazine, the academic journal of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
Ingram also joined colleagues in writing a paper on “A Statistical Analysis
of Student Questions in a Cell Biology Laboratory” that was published in
CBE-Life Sciences Education.

Thomas Mason |
Thomas Mason, professor of engineering management and economics, was awarded
the Vocational Service Award by the Terre Haute Rotary. The award recognizes
a member’s service to his or her profession. Past award winners have
included Rose-Hulman President emeritus Sam Hulbert.
-----------------------------
Rose-Hulman has completed its membership in the Carnegie Academy for the
Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (CASTL) Leadership Program, a Carnegie
Foundation project to build on the influential work undertaken by colleges
and universities, campus centers and educational organizations, scholarly
and professional societies, and CASTL Campus Program Leadership Clusters, to
facilitate collaboration among institutions with demonstrated commitment to
and capacity for action, inquiry and innovation in the scholarship of
teaching and learning.
Participating institutions were organized to address specific themes
important to the improvement of student learning, as well as the development
and sustainability of a scholarship of teaching and learning.
Rose-Hulman’s participation focused on Integrating the Scholarship of
Teaching and Learning into Institutional Culture: Philosophy, Policy and
Infrastructure, and the Institute partnered with Open University (United
Kingdom), Bournemouth University (UK), Western Carolina University, Buffalo
State College, University of New South Wales (Australia) and University of
Victoria (Canada).
Assisting in the three-year process were Rose-Hulman faculty members Phil
Cornwell, Patrick Cunningham, Kay C Dee, Jim Hanson and Art Western.
-----------------------------
Rose-Hulman’s work with tablet PCs in education was represented at the
annual Workshop on the Impact of Pen-based Technologies in Education
conference at Virginia Tech. Julia Williams, executive director of the
Office of Institutional Research, Planning and Assessment; Josh Holden,
associate professor of mathematics; and Shannon Sexton, director of
assessment, were co-authors of a paper on “Math in Your Hands: Integrating
the Use of Maple with the Collaborative Use of WirelessTablet PCs.” This
paper will appear in a collection from Purdue University Press.
------------------------------

Julia Williams |
Julia Williams, executive director of the Office of Institutional Research,
Planning and Assessment, was invited to participate in the keynote panel
presentation at the American Association of Colleges and Universities
(AAC&U) Integrative Learning Conference in Atlanta. The keynote topic was
“Supporting Integrative and Lifelong Learning through Authentic Assessment,
Teaching, and Eportfolio Development” and provided insights on the AAC&U’s
Valid Assessment of Learning in Undergraduate Education project.
-----------------------------
Curt Clifton, assistant professor of computer science and software
engineering, presented a talk on “Demands and Challenges” to the Workshop on
Curricula in Concurrency and Parallelism at the ACM Conference on Object
Oriented Programming Systems, Languages and Applications.
-----------------------------

Sue Niezgoda |
Sue Niezgoda, assistant professor of civil engineering, participated in the
Mid-Atlantic Stream Restoration Conference in Morgantown W.V. She is chair
of the American Society of Civil Engineers’ Stream Restoration Educational
Materials Task Committee, under the ASCE Hydraulics and Waterways Council,
River Restoration Committee.
Niezgoda’s committee is developing a summary of the current state of the art
in restoration education and working to clarify the education and training
needs of stream restoration professionals, to benefit curriculum and
professional development planning.
At the conference, Niezgoda presented a summary of the committee’s progress
and also facilitated first distribution of a survey she developed, with the
assistance of Rose-Hulman’s Office of Institutional Research, Planning and
Assessment. This survey is one of the early steps in the development of
courses and outcomes accounting for the insights of practicing engineers,
needs of graduate programs, and pedagogical and personnel limitations of a
specific program.

Rose-Hulman hosted visitors from Japan on November 6. These visitors,
representing three universities in Tokyo and vicinity, made the trip to
consult with faculty and staff of Rose-Hulman regarding accreditation and
assessment processes. They also met with faculty and staff at Stevens
Institute of Technology and the University of Missouri-Columbia.
The Japanese universities represented were Shibaura Institute of Technology,
Tokyo Denki University and Kogakuin University.
Rose-Hulman faculty and staff members meeting with their Japanese
counterparts were Patsy Brackin, David Purdy, Maki Hirotani, Richard Layton,
Rick Stamper, Art Western and Julia Williams.
---------------------------

Janie McNichols |
Janie McNichols, assistant director of Rose-Hulman’s Homework Hotline,
presented a paper on “Exploring the Minds of Homework Hotline Tutors” at the
Indiana Council of Teachers of Mathematics Conference in Indianapolis. The
paper identified and discussed the most common problems students are facing
when asking for mathematics homework help.
---------------------------

Allen Broughton |
Allen Broughton, chair of Rose-Hulman’s Department of Mathematics, helped
organize an American Mathematical Society special session on “Automorphisms
of Riemann Surfaces and Related Topics” at Penn State. The 21 speakers were
from Spain, Germany, Poland, Sweden, Mexico, New Zealand and the United
States. Broughton made a presentation on “Flat Surfaces,Teichmueller
Discs,Veech Groups,and the Veech Tessellation.”
In other math department news, colleague Zhixu Su recently presented the
paper “Rational Analog of Projective Planes” at the University of Notre
Dame.
