Alumnus/Trustee Jim Umpleby Named CEO of Caterpillar

Corporate Executive: Upcoming Caterpillar Chief Executive Officer Jim Umpleby is a 1980 mechanical engineering alumnus and trustee who received an honorary doctorate at the institute’s 2016 commencement.

Mechanical engineering alumnus and trustee Jim Umpleby has been selected to become the chief executive officer of Caterpillar Inc., a Fortune 500 company, replacing retiring executive Doug Oberhelman on Jan. 1.

Umpleby, a 35-year veteran of the company, currently serves as a Caterpillar group president, with responsibility for energy and transportation interests.

After graduating from Rose-Hulman in 1980, he joined Solar Turbines Inc. in San Diego. Solar Turbines, a wholly owned subsidiary of Caterpillar Inc., is one of the world's leading manufacturers of industrial gas turbine systems. Umpleby held numerous positions of increasing responsibility in engineering, manufacturing, sales, marketing, and customer services for Solar Turbines.

Umpleby was elected a Caterpillar vice president and president of Solar Turbines in 2010, and became a group president and a member of Caterpillar's executive office in early 2013. He serves on the board of directors of the World Resource Institute and U.S.-India Business Council. He has been a member of Rose-Hulman’s Board of Trustees since 2014.

This spring, Umpleby was awarded an honorary doctorate of engineering degree during Rose-Hulman’s 2016 commencement. The former student body president received the Alumni Association’s Career Achievement Award in 2000.

With 2015 sales and revenues of $47 billion, Caterpillar is a leading manufacturer worldwide of construction and mining equipment, diesel and natural gas engines, industrial gas turbines, and diesel-electric locomotives.
