Rose-Hulman Students Help Area Children Enjoy Holiday Season

Singing Christmas carols
and wearing Elf hats, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology
students applied their engineering skills to bring holiday cheer
to hundreds of children in Indiana and Illinois by assembling a
record 500 bicycles and tricycles in a community service
project.More
than 300 members of Rose-Hulman’s Greek community, residence
halls, athletic teams and other student organizations spent
eight hours on Dec. 15 assembling, inspecting and delivering the
bicycles to children of needy families for the Exchange Club of
Terre Haute’s annual Bikes For Tykes program. This is the ninth
straight year that Rose-Hulman students have assisted with this
effort.

During his inaugural address April 27 as the newly installed president of Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, Gerald Jakubowski said
Rose-Hulman's role has never been more important in meeting the needs of our local, state and national communities.Speaking
before a crowd estimated at 1,100, Jakubowski said, "Never before has the mission of this college been more important to our students,
to Terre Haute, to our state, and to our nation than it is today and will be tomorrow."

Meeting the ‘Fast Track Calculus’ Challenge |
|
|
|
|
The first members of Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology’s
2006-07 freshman class have arrived on campus to hit the books
to complete an entire year of college-level calculus courses --
in just five weeks! Forty-seven students from 16 states and
India are enrolled in Rose-Hulman’s unique Fast Track Calculus
program, through Aug. 18. The group is reviewing differential
and integral calculus, covering all of the multivariable
calculus, and becoming familiar with the computer implementation
of mathematics.

Jakubowski's Introduction as New President |

|
Gerald S.
Jakubowski, vice president of Arizona State University, provost
of the ASU Polytechnic campus and professor of engineering, has
been selected to be the 13th president of Rose-Hulman Institute
of Technology. Jakubowski will assume the presidency on July 1,
according to Robert Bright, chairman of the Rose-Hulman Board of
Trustees. He was chosen after a six-month national search. He
was introduced to the campus community on March 17 during a
Hatfield Hall announcement. After meeting with the campus
community, he addressed a news conference.

perfect 4.0 grade point average joined Institute First Lady
Shirley Bright in being honored by the Parents’ Association at
its Mom’s Day Dinner on March 25.

Institute of Technology to demonstrate a hybrid-powered bus, and
got a first-hand look at a hybrid sport utility vehicle being
developed by students for the Challenge X: Crossover to
Sustainable Mobility engineering competition.

A $141,634 grant from the Oakley Foundation
of Terre Haute will
allow Rose-Hulman Institute
of Technology students to utilize the
Internet to operate a telescope based at a new observatory
in
Australia, keeping the college at the forefront
of astronomical
technology and discovery. Professor Richard Ditteon,
director of the observatory, explains how the grant will be
used.

The job market for Rose-Hulman seniors
and students seeking internships or summer jobs continues to be
excellent as indicated by response from recruiters who attended the
fall Career Fair on Oct. 19. The event attracted recruiters from 141
companies. The following day nearly 850 interviews were conducted on
campus by recruiters representing 34 businesses.
The following video includes an interview with Rose-Hulman Career
Services Director Kevin Hewerdine, and John Kellam, a plant manager
and recruiter for Milliken Co.

a three-week hands-on, project-driven program for students who think
