Useful Books

Getting What You Came For -- The Smart Student's Guide to Earning a Master's or Ph.D., Robert L. Peters. Farrar, Straus, and Giroux, New York, 1997. This book comes highly recommended by both Dr. White and Dr. Stamper. It is useful in deciding whether to go to graduate school, understanding how to pick a school, and also describes the mechanics of getting a graduate degree.

Dr. White also recommends Graduate Research: A Guide for Students in the Sciences (Robert V. Smith), Advice for a Young Investigator (Santiago RamonyCajal), and A Ph.D. is Not Enough: A Guide to Survival in Science (Peter Feibelman).

Dr. Stienstra found What Color is Your Parachute? very useful in choosing his career path.

All of these books are now on reserve in Logan Library under the name "Graduate School Resources". You can check them out for a few days and decide for yourself if they might be worthwhile.
