Go to Mathematics Minor | Go to Statitics Minor

This webpage contains the information on the area minors in mathematicsand statistics including the requirements of the current on-line bulletin, frozen at June 1, 2008 and in force September 1, 2008. For past mathematics catalogue information or updates please see the recent versions and updates section of the degree overview page.

AREA MINOR IN MATHEMATICS

Requirements

A student, not pursuing major in mathematics, computer science, economics, or a second major in mathematics may obtain an area minor in mathematics by taking 10 or more mathematics courses as follows:
  • six courses in foundational mathematics
    • Calculus, Differential Equations and Matrix Algebra: MA111, MA112, MA113, MA221, MA222
    • Basic Probability and Statistics or Basic Statistics: one of MA223 or MA381
  • sixteen additional credit hours of "upper division" courses: selected from MA275 (MA215), all MA courses numbered 300 or higher (except MA351-356 and MA450).

Approval, Math Minor Form, and Number of Additional Required Classes

All area minors must be approved by the area minor advisor (Math Department Head) and the student's advisor. The department has a form for the planning and approval of a minor. A table showing, for each major, the number of additional overloads or AP credits required to complete a minor or second major in mathematics, may be found here.

Notes on requirements:

  • Almost all students are required to take six foundational courses as a requirement for their major, therefore only four "extra courses" are required for most students.
  • No student can take both MA371 and MA373 for credit.
  • No student can take both MA223 and MA382 for credit.
  • If MA381 is being counted towards the four additional courses, then MA223 may be taken and counted towards the Basic Probability and Statistics requirement.
  • Science and engineering, especially the more recently developed “high tech” areas, have sophisticated mathematical and statistical concepts and methodologies in their foundation. Thus a well chosen set of courses for a mathematics minor (or a second major in mathematics) will greatly enhance a student's analytical and computational skills. Students thinking of going on to graduate school should especially give consideration to this option.

Suggested Minors

Any approved set of courses meeting the requirements can constitute a minor. Usually the courses for a minor should be selected with some theme or purpose in mind. For instance the courses may provide support for or complement the students major courses. Alternatively, the courses may be selected so that fulfills a student's interest in a broad appreciation of mathematics. In all cases the area minor advisor or student's advisor will offer guidance in the selection of the courses, and the approval of both is required. In the table below are some themes for minors. Old course numbers are in brackets.

Theme Suggested Courses
Applied Statistics MA223 (as a foundational course), MA383 and three of MA385, MA481, MA482, MA485, MA487 or Statistics topics course.
Operations Research - Industrial Mathematics MA444, up to two statistics courses, the remaining courses to be selected from MA371, MA445, MA446, MA348, MA534
Mathematics Applied to Science and Engineering 16 credits from MA330 (MA305), MA336 (MA302), MA325, MA373, MA431, MA433, MA436
Applied Algebra and Discrete Mathematics MA275 (MA215), MA371, and two of MA375 (MA315), MA444, MA446, MA475 (MA415), MA476, MA477
Scientific Computing MA371 or MA373, MA433, one of MA341 (MA331) or MA348, and another course
Generic (breadth in mathematics) MA371, MA381, and any two courses from MA275 (MA215), MA330 (MA305), MA336 (MA302), MA367 (MA310), MA378, MA444 and a statistics course

AREA MINOR IN STATISTICS

Requirements

A student, not pursuing a major or second major in mathematics may obtain an area minor in statistics by taking ten or more mathematics courses including the following:

  • Globally required mathematics courses
    • MA111 Calculus I
    • MA112 Calculus II
    • MA113 Calculus III
    • MA221 Differential Equations and Matrix Algebra I
