Degree Requirements - Double Major and Two Degrees

This webpage contains the information on the double major and two degrees program in mathematics including the requirements of the current on-line bulletin, frozen at June 1, 2008 and in force September 1, 2008. For past mathematics catalogue information or updates please see the recent versions and updates section of the degree overview page.

MATHEMATICS DOUBLE MAJOR AND TWO DEGREES

This web page is for students seeking a double major or two degrees in mathematics and another major.   For further information not contained in this web page, either drop by the Mathematics Department office, G205a, or email the Mathematics Department head: brought@rose-hulman.edu.

Double Major Requirements

To complete a double major at Rose-Hulman you must satisfy all the degree requirements of the first major and all of the departmental requirements of the second major (including prerequisites). Almost all combinations are allowed. There are special requirements for CS/SE and SE/CS.
  • If you are completing an MA/XX double major you should consult the second major's department head for the complete description of the named requirements. Specifics on the concentration requirements and planning templates may be found on Angel as specified in the resources section below. The course MA 190 is required of all students completing a math degree.
  • If you are completing an XX/MA double major you must complete the 63 hours of mathematics "content" requirements and 8 hours of "project/thesis" requirements. The course MA190 is not required, but is recommended. It is normally possible to combine the project/thesis requirements of both programs, see the policy section below. Specific mathematics requirements to be completed for a second major in mathematics are:
    • Mathematics core courses : 39 hours
    • Concentration courses : 12 hours
    • Math elective courses: 12 hours
    • Project/Thesis (or equivalent): 8 hours.
Specifics on the concentration requirements and planning templates may be found on Angel as specified in the resources section below.
  • A table showing, for each major, the number of additional overloads or AP credits required to complete a second major or minor in mathematics, may be found here.
Also see the Double Major entry on the Academic Rules and Procedures webpage.

Two Degrees

To complete a two degree program the requirements of both majors must be completed plus a minimum of 32 hours credit hours beyond the larger degree. Some restrictions apply, please see the Two Degrees entry on the Academic Rules and Procedures. Exceptions to the restrictions may be petitioned to the Curriculum Committee.

Planning and Approval Procedure

The procedure and documentation for two degrees is similar to that for a double major. The differences are note at the end of this paragraph.
  • Consult with your advisor and the two department heads on the requirements of the double major, paying particular attention to resolving conflicts between requirements for the two majors, and how the senior project will be completed.
  • Prepare a double major plan for approval by your advisor, the two department heads, The HSS department head and the Dean. The plan should be submitted by the fall quarter of your junior year, but you are advised to begin planning earlier than this to ensure that you will be able to fit all the courses in your schedule, and that all conflicts are resolved.
  • The Curriculum Committee requires the following format for the plan:
    • a cover memo, with signature blocks, requesting approval and noting any special circumstances such as course substitutions, minors, or certificate programs,
    • a four year schedule showing the credit hours,
    • a table showing how you satisfy all program requirements of the first major, (format specified by the primary department) and
    • a table showing how you satisfy the named requirements of the second major (format specified by the secondary department).
  • Example templates of the above forms are available as Word documents and Excel spread sheets via download in the links below. The cover sheets are also available on the Registrar's home page.
  • Submit the plan first to your advisor, then both department heads, the HSS Department Head, and then the Dean. Programs involving Economics should also be signed by the Economics advisor. Programs involving Biochemistry & Molecular Biology as a second major should be be signed by the BMB adviser
  • Should you need to revise your program, submit a revised plan for approval as above.

For two degrees program, the proposal must go through the same planning and approval stages as a double major except that you must show how you meet all the requirements of the second major.

Policy on senior projects for double majors

It is possible to use the senior project courses of a primary major as a course substitution for the senior project course requirements of a second major, provided that the second Department agrees. If such a course substitution will be made then it must so noted in the double major proposal. Here is the relevant policy covering senior projects and double majors.

Resources on Angel

Templates for double major proposals, checksheets for requirements, past catalogues and other proposal planning and preparation documents are available in the Angel Major Group for Mathematics. You will need to log on to Angel and go to the Major Group for Mathematics Community Group. If you are not already enrolled please send email to brought@rose-hulman.edu.

Historical Data

The double major program has played an important role in Mathematics program during the last decade and is increasingly important. Mathematics (along with Computer Science) is one of the most compatible degrees for a double major as the second chart below shows. The growth in the numbers of double majors and two degree programs is illustrated in Figure 1 and the distribution by major is illustrated in Figure 2 below. Tables showing the actual number of students for each the various combinations follow that.
