Project Recap Day on August 16, 2006

On Wednesday, August 16, members of the Tablet Project Team met for a recap of the work they completed over the summer.  These faculty spent the summer adapting one of their courses to the tablet PC and DyKnow Vision software.  Members of the Summer Project Team are (left to right):  Shannon Sexton, Institutional Research, Planning and Assessment (IRPA); Pat Ferro, Mechanical Engineering; David Mutchler, Computer Science and Software Engineering; Meredith Zoetewey, Humanities and Social Sciences; Julia Williams, IRPA (not pictured, Sudipa Kirtley, Physics and Optical Engineering).

One of the important revisions to the courses was the development of classroom assessment techniques (CATs) that were implemented within DyKnow.  In some cases these CATs were already features in DyKnow, in others they represented new functionality.  In addition to adapting to the new technology, each faculty member developed measurable course objectives that will be used in the coming year to assess the impact of the tablet/DyKnow symbiosis on student learning.

During the Recap Day, three faculty members gave brief demonstrations of their course materials using a sample DyKnow class format.  The rest of the team acted as "students" to allow the faculty member to determine the success of the adaptation and to troubleshoot problems.

Dr. Rebecca DeVasher, Chemistry

Rebecca is a first-time user of tablets and DyKnow.  She plans to implement the hardware and software in her Engineering Chemistry course in the winter quarter 2006-07.

Dr. Meredith Zoetewey, Humanities and Social Sciences

Meredith is an experienced user of tablets and DyKnow.  Here Meredith demonstrates a Preconception Check CAT she developed in DyKnow for use in her Technical Communication courses in the fall quarter.

Dr. Pat Ferro, Mechanical Engineering

Pat is a first-time user of tablets and DyKnow.  He is revising his Design for Manufacturing course to incorporate both CATS and DyKnow with tablets.
