GE 111/112/113 German Language
and Culture I/II/III

 
Pre: Preceding course

Provides elementary training in hearing, speaking, reading, and writing German. Uses reading exercises to show the relationship between language and culture. Required language laboratory.

 
GE 211/212/213 German Language
and Culture IV/V/VI

Pre: Preceding course
    Provides a survey of Latin America from its ancient civilizations to the present. Emphasizes nationalism, international relations, economy, culture and society.

 
GE 215 German Study Abroad Summer
Maximum Credit: 8
Pre: Consent of Instructor
    Students who take courses in German language and culture at a German university are given credit according to the number of hours of course work. Courses must be approved in advance and evidence of satisfactory completion of the course(s) must be presented.
GE 311 Issues in German Culture  
    Examines the global influence and impact of a variety of historical and contemporary issues in German popular and high culture.  Possible topics are "Germany and the European Community," "20th Century German History," "The History of German Film," "20th Century German Drama," and "German Art and Architecture."  The issues will be analyzed and discussed in a social, political and historical context, using a comparative approach.  This course is taught in English and is open to all students.  Students in the 4th year German Studies Program enroll in GE311 and read several of the required texts in German.  In addition, they submit all major writing assignments in German.
GE 312 Advanced German Grammar
    Introduces and practices advanced grammar concepts and methods of translation.
GE 313 Advanced Comprehension and Composition
    Studies and practices effective reading and comprehension of German texts.  Analyzes a wide variety of texts and evaluates their content in discussions and writing of essays.
GE 411/SL411 Culture and Technology  
    Studies and analyzes the background, issues and perceptions of science and technology in German culture in a particular cultural arena.  Possible topics include: "Technology and Science in German Literature," "The Development of Technology and Science in Germany," and "Industrialization and Industry in Germany."  This course is taught in English and is open to all students.  Students in the 4th year German Studies Program enroll in GE411 and read several texts in German.  In addition, they submit all major writing assignments in German.
GE 412 Technical Translation  
    Introduces scientific and technological vocabulary; continues working with complex grammatical structures; applies methods of translation using scientific and technical texts.  Requires the writing of a major technical translation project.
GE 413/VA413 Critique of Technology  
    Introduces and studies texts of German origin dealing with the critique of technology in German intellectual thought.  Analyzes these texts and views them in the context of the concrete development and impact of technology and science in Germany.  This course is taught in English and is open to all students.  Students in the 4th year German Studies Program enroll in GE413 and read several of the required texts in German.  In addition, they submit all major writing assignments in German.
