Women's soccer to attain varsity status in 1999

Rose-Hulman will add women’s soccer to its varsity athletic program in 1999.

Women’s soccer will become the 19th varsity and eighth women’s sport offered by the college. Other women’s sports include basketball, cross country, track and field, rifle, swimming, tennis and volleyball.
Greg Ruark, who has coached the Rose-Hulman men’s soccer team for the past 10 seasons, will also serve as the first women’s soccer coach.

“We’ve had 20 to 25 women on campus who have been working toward this goal. It is nice to see their efforts rewarded,” said Ruark. We are looking forward to elevating this program as high as it can possibly go.”

“We are very excited about adding another varsity sport for our student-athletes,” said Rose-Hulman President Samuel Hulbert. The current students showed significant interest in this program, and we plan on having a competitive program next fall.

Rose-Hulman Athletic Director Scott Duncan is pleased to see another addition to the athletic program, stating, “Women’s soccer will serve the school by allowing more opportunities for students to compete in intercollegiate athletics. This is the next step in the development of our women’s athletic programs.”

The women’s soccer club team played four organized contests this fall, finishing with a 1-3 overall record, in preparation of playing a full varsity schedule next season.
