Ings Leads Solar Turbines to Malcolm Baldridge Award
Receiving the prestigious Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award is an honor few
companies have achieved.
Alumnus Don Ings knows what it takes to lead a company to the high standards required to
be a Baldrige Award winner.
In November, Ings and his colleagues at Solar Turbines, Inc. in San Diego, were selected
as a winner of the sought-after national award. Solar Turbines was named the winner in the
manufacturing category by the United States Department of Commerce and the National
Institute of Standards and Technology.
Winning this award is a tremendous honor for Solar and Caterpillar, said Ings.
Solar Turbines is a wholly owned subsidiary of Caterpillar Inc.
We have aligned our business with the Malcolm Baldrige criteria for performance
excellence and believe our growing market leadership and record business results are
evidence that its paying off, said Ings, who has just accepted a new position
heading up another Caterpillar division in Raleigh, N.C.
Solar Turbines is the leading manufacturer of industrial gas turbine engines in its size
range. It employs about 3,700 people in San Diego and another 2,500 in 45 locations
worldwide.
Ings and his employees were praised by Caterpillar Chairman and Chief Executive Officer
Donald Fites: Solars success is representative of the dedication of
Caterpillar employees around the world to providing our customers with the reliable,
durable, quality products and services for which the name Caterpillar has stood for nearly
75 years.
Ings, who earned a mechanical engineering degree from Rose-Hulman in 1970, is a recipient
of the Rose-Hulman Distinguished Young Alumnus Award has been inducted into the
colleges Athletic Hall of Fame.
