September 26, 1998
Kahn Room, Hulman Union

President Art Nelson (’75) chaired the meeting, which opened with approval of minutes from the 1997 meeting. They were approved as published in Echoes.

Secretary/Treasurer Bob Steinhauser (’54) moved to elect Gov. Frank O’Bannon and Mari Hulman George to honorary membership in the Association. They were so elected. O’Bannon and George received honorary doctorates during the 1998 commencement. Others receiving honorary degrees were Frederick J. Bogardus (’32), Ernest R. Davidson (’58), Robert Steinhauser (’54) and Alexander J. Vogl (’49).

Election results were announced. Roger Ward (’71) was elected vice president of the association and Fred Clayton (’70) was elected alumni representative to the Board of Trustees. Steinhauser was re-elected to the position of secretary/treasurer.

Jack Foltz (’57) provided an update on the Board of Trustees, where he served as alumni representative. He said the school was “on track” and that morale is good. He also reported on progress for a new residence hall, a record year in fund raising, strong enrollment and a Board review of faculty compensation.

In the area of alumni giving, Tom Dinkel (’72) reported alumni giving was at 47 percent for 1997-98, one of the best rates in the country. Alumni contributed $6 million to Rose-Hulman last year.

Concerning student recruitment, Dinkel reported a pilot program is under way in Chicago that involves alumni help in recruiting Rose-Hulman students.

Alumni Director Brian Dyer updated the association about an active year for alumni activities. Thirty events took place on campus, including record attendance for Dad’s Day and Mom’s Night. Several alumni club activities took place around the country.

Fred Goetsch (’57) reviewed Honor Alumni winners: Richard Conard (’70), Thomas R. Curry (’67), Richard A. Neal (’77) and David Whiteley (’78). The Awards and Recognition Committee is investigating new awards to recognize alumni, including an award for class agents.

Art Nelson reported upgrades continue for alumni services through the Office of Career Services. Included in that process are increased services for alumni on the Office of Career Services web page. An “evergreen” concept is being adopted to serve alumni in this area, years after their graduation.

Another “evergreen” area is continuing education, according to Dale Oexmann (’62). The committee is looking at ways to use the web in the area. It wants input from alumni. If you have a continuing education idea, contact Oexmann at e-mail address dale.oexmann@rose-hulman.edu.

Homecoming 1998 was turning out to be a strong one, Chairman Ted Jaenke (’60) reported. A total of 441 alumni were at reunion dinners plus another 162 at the Fifty Plus Club.

Bunny Nash, assistant director of alumni affairs, reported a strong response to the senior relocation survey conducted among alumni by LINK, the student alumni association. LINK continues to grow in numbers and focus.

The Nomination Committee put forth the following slate for 1999-00 vice presidential elections: Patrick Cahill (’67) and Jeff McCreary (’79).

No old business carried over from last year’s meeting and no new business was presented to the secretary.

The meeting closed with Art Nelson turning the gavel over to incoming president Ray Frischkorn (’65).
