Winter 1997

In focus

Physics and Applied Optics Professor Richard Ditteon (Phy., '74) examines a 111-year-old Alvan Clark telescope that was added to the campus' observatory this fall. Clark telescopes, each handcrafted, are recognized for their optical work. It was donated by Hans Eppinger of Hughes Optical Products, Inc., and has been placed on a modern, computerized mount, purchased through a donation by Eugene Glass (E.E../M.E., '49). The pier on which the mount and telescope rests was designed and constructed by technicians Gary Burgess and Mike Fulk.
