Reed heads ISPE chapter

Citing a concern for engineering ethics and promotion of the profession, Samuel J. Reed, a 1981 mechanical engineering graduate, is the new president of the Central Indiana Chapter Society of Professional Engineers.

ISPE focuses on ethical standards of practice, quality engineering education for students, and support of the social, professional and economic interests of its members.

Reed said he was driven to become more involved in the promotion of engineering because of the need to:

• focus on ethics in engineering;

• get young people interested in the profession;

• set standards for what it takes to be called an engineer.

Another area Reed wants to focus the group on is promotion of engineering, science and mathematics in the schools. "I'm convinced young children don't view engineers and scientists as prestigious as they do other professions."

Reed is a principal in BSA Design, an architectural firm in Indianapolis. He has provided engineering support on projects such as medical research and hospital facilities, educational structures, institutional buildings, and commercial facilities. His scope of responsibility encompasses mechanical and electrical systems, analysis, concept development and design, and engineering support for project management and facility planning.
