Winter 1997

Alumni meet across the country

Whether it was Los Angeles, Dallas, Detroit or St. Louis, Rose-Hulman alumni this fall met to learn the latest campus news and renew friendships. Loyal support from a number of alumni volunteers made the hectic September through November schedule of activities possible, noted Tony Wellings, director of alumni affairs and special events.

In addition to a great Homecoming, September activities included a golf outing and dinner for Detroit and Midland, Michigan alumni. The outing, at the Heather Highlands Golf Club, was coordinated by Brack Benge, president of the Detroit alumni club. The winning foursome was Howard Freers, Jim Freers, Ed Mabley and Bill Schott.

Also in September, alumni in the Baton Rouge, Louisiana, area met with Phil Purcell, director of planned gifts and development counsel, who provided an update about campus developments.

On November 8, alumni events were conducted in Dallas and Terre Haute. Alumni and their families from the Dallas area enjoyed a day at Storybrook Party Town in McKinney, Texas. Darrell Loyless, vice president for development and external affairs, and Wellings were campus representatives. Thanks to Jeff McCreary for his efforts to organize the event.

Alumni from the Wabash Valley and Indianapolis enjoyed a luncheon on campus prior to Rose-Hulman's football game against Hanover College. Tours of the new Sports and Recreation Center also were provided.

Houston area alumni gathered Nov. 9 at Cafe Adobe for a dinner meeting and program. A slide show and speech by Rose-Hulman Vice President Darrell Loyless provided alums with an update about new facilities and programs on campus. A special thank you to J.Q. Delap for organizing the event.

At the end of November, Rose-Hulman alumni in Japan and East Asia were invited to a Thanksgiving celebration hosted by Norm Schuld in Tokyo. Professor Jim Eifert, who is on sabbatical at Kanazawa Institute of Technology in Japan, served as guest speaker.
