Winter 1997

Fast Forward scheduled for 1998

A group of Rose-Hulman professors will offer a menu of challenging, fun activities for Fast Forward 1998. Fast Forward is open to girls who will have completed the seventh or eighth grades having demonstrated an interest and aptitude in mathematics, science, or engineering.

All activities revolve around a central project of developing a solar-powered car. Working in teams, participants will be given a solar cell, motor and instruction on the basics of solar-powered vehicles. From there, participants will design, build, and test a solar vehicle. The project finale will be a race competition titled Sun Race 98.

Additional learning activities last year included construction of a hologram; study of plastics and recycling; using computers to have fun with fractals; math sessions on graph theory; career presentations; and an on-the-spot design project. Also on the schedule are various supervised recreational activities.

Session I will run from July 29 through Aug. 2, and Session II will begin on Aug. 4 and end Aug. 8. Participants will get to experience life on a college campus by staying in an air-conditioned residence hall.

Registration is limited to 30 participants in each session.
