Smith swims to two SCAC championships

Sophomore Matt Smith finished 19th in the 100-yard breaststroke, 27th in the 200-yard breaststroke, and 37th in the 50-yard freestyle at the NCAA III Swimming National Championships at Emory University on Mar. 16-18.

Smith qualified for the nationals by winning two events at the SCAC Championships at DePauw University in February.

Baseball team has rebuilding year

The Rose-Hulman baseball team endured a season of rebuilding, finishing the season with a 19-22-1 record, ending a streak of 10 winning seasons and 10 consecutive 20-win seasons for head coach Jeff Jenkins.

Senior shortstop Mike Krueger capped his record setting Rose-Hulman career with first-team all-Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference honors. Krueger holds career records for hits (176), games played (158), runs scored (134), runs batted in (121), and doubles (41). This season, Krueger batted .338 with seven doubles, three triples and two home runs. Senior Phil Munzer joined Krueger on the all-conference team with the eighth-best single-season batting average in school history this season. Munzer batted .396 with 11 doubles and three triples and was the only Engineer to appear in all 42 contests.

Freshman Ryan Keefer led the Engineers pitching staff in winning percentage (.667) and earned run average (4.10).

Pole vaulter earns all-American honors

Freshman pole vaulter Andrew Schipper earned runner-up and All-American honors in the pole vault as one of the highlights of Rose-Hulman’s efforts at the 1999-2000 NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field National Championship in May.

Schipper cleared 16' 2 3/4" in his first attempt to tie for second place. He became the third Rose-Hulman pole vaulter in the last nine years to earn All-American honors.

The Rose-Hulman men’s track and field squad placed sixth, while the women placed eighth in the SCAC Championships.

Softball wins threein inaugural season

The Rose-Hulman softball team finished the 2000 season with three victories in its first season of NCAA Division III play. The Engineers picked up three conference victories in compiling a 3-21 overall record last spring.  Junior first baseman Christine Trossman led the team in batting with a .456 average to earn the first all-conference honor in program history.  Senior Mary Kundrat and freshman Amy Stutler earned honorable mention all-conference honors. Freshman Jennifer Phelps led the pitching staff with two victories.

Racket roundup

The men’s tennis team finished the 1999-2000 season with a 14-13 record and took seventh in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference championship. Junior Robert Kober, sophomore Kris Chaney, freshman Drew Wright and sophomore Jake Isenberg held down the top four singles slots for the Engineers. Rose-Hulman also earned its first-ever regional ranking in the 1999-2000 season, placing 25th in the NCAA III Midwest regional poll.

Rose-Hulman freshman Alison Bailey and graduate student Becky Smith became the first Rose-Hulman women’s tennis players to earn all Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference honors.

Rose-Hulman women finished the 1999-2000 season with a 10-16 record and finished ninth in the SCAC Championships.

Golfers fifth at SCAC

The men's golf team placed fifth in the 2000 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference championships. Rose-Hulman shot a team score of 652. Oglethorpe University won the championship with a score of 620. Sophomore Jeremy Roehm finished sixth individually to pace the Engineers. Roehm finished 10 shots behind the medalist. Freshman Corey Trobaugh added a top 10 finish.
