President Ray Frischkorn, class of 1965, called the meeting to order. The minutes of the 1998 meeting were approved as published in Echoes. Secretary/Treasurer Bob Steinhauser reported honorary degrees were awarded at commencement to William Bannon, Ronald W. Dollens, Marylin Leinenbach, Glen Raque (69), Thomas Tarzian (68) and James F. Vance. The non-alumni members were elected to honorary membership in the alumni association. Secretary/Treasurer Steinhauser then announced election results for association officers. Pat Cahill, class of 1967, was elected vice president. After his reports, Steinhauser was re-elected to the position of secretary/treasurer. Trustee Report Fred Clayton, class of 1970 and one of the alumni representatives to the Board of Trustees, reported several good things have been taking place at the school and that "everything is in good shape." He did announce the Class of 1954 had established a scholarship fund with a goal of $1 million. Alumni Giving Tom Dinkel, class of 1972, reported the 1998-99 alumni giving rate was 50 percent. That ranks Rose-Hulman among the top 20 schools in the country and the top technical school, he said. Alumni Clubs Dave Piker reported a flurry of alumni club activity in recent months. Alumni turned out in Washington, D.C.; Charlottesville, Virginia; Atlanta; and Charlotte, S.C., for meetings focused on the Solar Phantom. Professional development meetings took place in Indianapolis and Detroit. Those get-togethers took alumni to the new Conseco field house and the Comerica stadium, respectively. Other club meetings took place in Chicago, Detroit and Cincinnati. A new club started in Lafayette, Ind. A tour to Greece also took place during the year. Awards & Recognition Fred Goetsch, class of 1957, reported a new award has been established for class agents to recognize agents with 25 years of service. He thanked Tony Wellings and Teresa Goddard for their assistance with this project. He also reported input is being sought for the Honor Alumnus award. Forward suggestions or nominations to Brian Dyer, director of alumni affairs and special events. Career Services Roger Ward, class of 1971, reviewed a new alumni career link on the web. He also reported that an alumni e-mail directory was on the way. Homecoming David Jennings, class of 1983, updated the association that a more user friendly brochure was developed for this year, and there were several new activities available for the whole family. Student Alumni Dave Piker reported the Student Alumni Association (originally called LINK) gets students involved with alumni. It has 15 members and carries through on the philosophy that good alumni are made while they are students. The Senior Relocation Program had 30 participants. He also reported on new endeavors of the Parents Association. Some concern was voiced by two attendees on recent reorganization of the parents leadership. Student Recruitment Dave Piker noted there has been an increased involvement of alumni through the Rose Alumni Recruiting Engineers program. Alumni have assisted representing Rose-Hulman at 30 college fairs and at information sessions in Chicago, Detroit, Washington, D.C., and Minnesota. Nomination committee Walt Johanningsmeier, class of 1956, presented the slate of nominees for vice president for 2000-01. They are: Richard Conard, class of 1970; Robert Schacht, class of 1972; and Douglas Winner, class of 1974. There was no old business or new business. The gavel was turned over to incoming president Roger Ward, class of 1971. |
