Barron's names Rose-Hulman a "Best Buy"

Rose-Hulman is one of the nation's best colleges for giving parents and students the most for the money they spend on a college education, according to the editors of Barron's Best Buys in College Education.

Rose-Hulman was among the colleges included in Barron's fifth edition of its popular guide. The guide included best buys among private and public colleges that offer degree programs in various fields including business, education, engineering, liberal arts and the sciences.

The guide cites Rose-Hulman for recruiting academically talented students who receive excellent job offers and graduate school opportunities upon graduation. The guide notes that a Rose-Hulman degree results in a bright financial future for graduates.

The average starting salary for 1998 Rose-Hulman graduates was $42,137. Salary offers of $50,000 were not uncommon. Within 90 days after graduation, 97% of last year's seniors had accepted a job, entered graduate school or received a commission in the military.

Salaries for May Rose-Hulman graduates will be seven to 10 percent higher than last year, according to William Lindstaedt, director of career services and employer relations at Rose-Hulman.

Barron's guide also cited Rose-Hulman faculty for their commitment to teaching. According to the guide, "Rose-Hulman faculty are hired to teach undergraduates; job performance evaluations are based on effectiveness in the classroom, not on the number of papers published."

Rose-Hulman was listed last fall as one of the nation's 34 hot colleges by the Kaplan/Newsweek's College Guide. Other colleges on the guide's list included MIT, Yale and Harvard.
