The Engineer women's basketball team won three games in the program's third year of existence, one more than the total from the squad's first two seasons combined. But it was an unsatisfying campaign for first-year Head Coach Brenda Davis and her squad, who were surely destined for a better fate if they could have avoided a plague of injuries. By the midway point of the season, Davis had lost three starters for the season to injury - and had two other players that played through injury problems for the majority of the season. The team did show drastic improvement in the final weeks of the season, and should be ready for its first year as a member of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference in 1998-99. Freshman Tarelle Van Dyk was definitely a bright spot for the Engineers, winning the ICAC's Newcomer of the Year honor. The freshman guard was joined on the all-league team by second team all-conference selection Amanda Speich, and honorable mention player Bessie Fulk. Speich, a junior guard, became the program's first player to score 1,000 career points. Fulk was voted the team's Most Valuable Player, and sophomore center Jennifer Schwartz was the team's Most Improved Player.
