Department expands Hispanic studies

Como est< usted? If you expressed that Spanish greeting to ask Rose-Hulman students, “How are you?,” more of them than ever before would reply in Spanish.

Rose-Hulman has expanded its Hispanic Studies programs to include two new area minors, one in Spanish and another in Latin American Studies. The minors achieve two global education goals recommended by the Commission on the Future of Rose-Hulman, said Hector Romero, head of the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences.

A Spanish Honors course has been added to the Spanish program, A Spanish Club has been approved by the Student Government Association, and a chapter of the prestigious Sigma Delta Pi National Hispanic Honor Society has been formed on campus.

“More than 150 students are currently at different levels in the Spanish program, and nearly 20 students are pursuing a Spanish minor,” said Romero.

The Latin American Studies program offers courses in Latin American history, culture, economics, language and politics.

Romero credits the successful development of the Latin American Studies program to the efforts of Professor Antonio de la Cova. “His expertise was vital in designing the new courses. A grant he authored will make it possible for a Fulbright Scholar to teach Latin American economics at Rose-Hulman during the winter quarter next year,” Romero explained.

He said future plans include creating internships and summer study programs for students to work and learn in Latin America.
