Two Named as Academic All-Americans

A pair of Rose-Hulman student-athletes earned Academic All-American honors from the College Sports Information Directors of America, in results released in the past two weeks.

Senior soccer midfielder Jessica Gross (Crown Point) and senior football safety Neil Harrison (Tucson, Ariz./Catalina Foothills) each earned second-team honors on the  2004 ESPN The Magazine College Division Academic All-America Team in their respective sports.

Rose-Hulman has placed 61 student-athletes on Academic All-American Teams since 1978, including at least honoree for 19 consecutive years.

Gross, a two-time Academic All-District selection who earned second-team honors last season, started all 19 games with two assists from the defensive midfield position.

Gross started 56 games at Rose-Hulman with three career goals, seven assists and 13 points.  She helped the team earn a 45-25-3 record in her career, including an 11-7-1 mark this year.

In the classroom, the computer engineering major carries a 3.95 grade point average and earned “Sophomore Student of the Year” honors from the Electrical and Computer Engineering department.

Harrison finished third on the Engineers with 65 tackles and added three interceptions, two forced fumbles and three pass deflections to his efforts in 2004.

In the classroom, the mechanical engineering major carries a 3.90 grade point average.  He has earned Dean's List honors during every academic quarter of his career.  Harrison, the only honoree from an Indiana college on this year's team, joined the football program at Rose-Hulman after not playing the sport during his high school career.

In his three years on the football squad, Harrison has recorded 165 tackles, five interceptions and three forced fumbles.  His efforts helped Rose-Hulman finish 4-6 this season, the team's second-best year since 1995.
