Web site continues to evolve

One of Rose-Hulman’s biggest publications continues to grow in size and offerings. The Rose-Hulman web site has evolved during the past year to make more information available to alumni, students, prospective students and friends of the Institute.

While school was in session last spring, the site was being accessed by almost 3,000 different computers daily. People were coming on and viewing an average of 5 to 6 pages per visit to the site.

A new design to the upper-tier pages is went on line in August. It enhances the look of the site while maintaining its navigability.

In the last issue of Echoes, we highlighted increased uses of the web by professors. Many are incorporating it in their classes, and this trend continues. However, other areas of the site are also growing that affect what is available to constituents off-campus. You can now use the Rose-Hulman web site to get the latest campus news, send in a class note, review academic calendars, browse the bookstore, find admissions information, get help with career planning (see sidebar article), or review the latest holdings in Logan Library.

The latest news about the alumni association and events can be accessed from the alumni page. While there, alumni can also submit class note information, update their address, request information about fellow alumni or scan back issues of Echoes.

Under study for the alumni area are ways to make the alumni directory accessible on line and the establishment of an alumni chat group.

People wanting to get the latest campus news should surf to the News and Sports site. There they can review the latest campus news and feature articles or check the sports happenings through Athletic Update. Several football and basketball games are broadcast live through the web. Also available at that site is calendar information and a feature called “Pride Box”. The pride feature contains news about Rose-Hulman recognition and honors. It contains “brag” material about the good things that have been happening at Rose-Hulman.

Of course, the library is another site of benefit to alumni and friends of the Institute. There are certain governmental database links available through that site. You can also come on and review what is available in the Logan Library collection. If the library has a book you need, you can e-mail a request and it will be sent to you if available, according to Librarian John Robson. If you want to see what’s happening academically, you can visit the academic section of the web where various departments have pages on line.

The bookstore maintains an on-line catalog that is updated periodically throughout the year.

If you are seeking a specific item, the front page of the Rose-Hulman web site contains a search option dedicated to the Rose-Hulman server. Another feature on the front page is a survey form. Visitors are encouraged to submit suggestions via the survey form.
