Alumni host Phantom team; more than 100 enjoy Indianapolis event

Rose-Hulman alumni in five cities hosted the Solar Phantom team in June when the team helped Sunrayce officials plan the route for Sunrayce 99. Alumni welcomed the team to Washington, D.C.; Lynchburg, Va.; Raleigh, N.C.; Charlotte, N.C.; and Atlanta.

The Solar Phantom completed the 10-day, 1,200-mile race route from Washington, D.C. to Epcot Center at Disney World in Orlando June 21-30. The team helped Sunrayce officials determine if the proposed route was safe and navigable for next year’s race.

Special thanks to the following alumni who helped to organize dinners or receptions for the team:

Washington, D.C.David Staggs, Harmon Shaw and Walt Johanningsmeier
Lynchburg, Va. —— Art Nelson, Alumni Association President
Raleigh, N.C. —— Bill Chambers
Charlotte, N.C. —— Bill Mitchell
Atlanta —— Jeff Pahl

Sunrayce 99 is scheduled from June 20-30 next year. Activities to enable alumni to meet the team during the race will be planned in most of the cities hosting overnight stops.

Nearly 150 alumni and their families joined campus representatives July 4 in Indianapolis. Alumni enjoyed a picnic and watched the Indianapolis Indians, the Triple A affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds, take on the Louisville Redbirds. After the game, they watched the city of Indianapolis’ fourth of July fireworks from their Victory Field seats.
