Fall 1998 |
|
Rose-Hulman athletes have always excelled in the classroom along with the playing field. The spring of 1998 continued this trend, as both teams and individuals earned recognition for their academic achievements. Senior athletes Ryan Loftus and Jimmy Costa each added their name to the list of the schools GTE/CoSIDA Academic All-Americans. Loftus, a two-time indoor pole vault national champion, became the second Rose-Hulman student to be named Academic All-American of the Year, the highest honor that any Division III athlete can receive (Kevin Kluemper, 1991). He graduated with a 3.82 GPA in chemical engineering. Costa tied the school record with 50 hits this season. Student-athletes must be a starter or important reserve in their respective sport, maintain a minimum 3.2 grade point average and be in at least their second academic year at their school to be nominated for the honor. All-district teams are voted on by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America, and district winners are eligible for All-American voting. Rose-Hulmans mens and womens tennis teams earned All-Academic status from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). The Engineers were one of just seven schools across the country to earn this dual recognition. Individual athletes Marcie Kam, Koji Okamoto and Becky Schenk each earned individual honors for having GPAs above 3.50.
