School Description:
Discover Your Future as a Leader Choosing which path to pursue in graduate school can be a difficult task, however, we're here to help. At Purdue, you have the opportunity to work in graduate programs ranked within the Top 15 nationwide. You can select both traditional-school research areas or partake in our interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approaches.

Taking on Society's Grand Challenges: Purdue Engineering Research Among the research within the College of Engineering, are projects to develop new major energy-sources, create healthcare solutions, generate environmentally friendly technologies, and foster systems that will end terrorism. Additionally the college has also established the nation's first Department of Engineering Education, which will grant the nation's first graduate degrees in engineering education.

We Invest in Your Future Our research is growing in exciting ways as new faculty and laboratories make their impact. In May 2005, the College of Engineering's extramural research cash awards were close to $6 million (not considering Agricultural and Biological Engineering and Computer Science). This increased the 2005 award-total to about $73 million, representing a 16% growth from 2004's figures ($62.3 million). Our strategic goal is to double the College of Engineering research awards in five years.

Expanding Research Facilities and Opportunities With the opening of Purdue Discovery Park, the finished and continuing construction of new buildings, and the additions to other engineering facilities, Purdue's College of Engineering, one the largest engineering colleges in the world, is increasing its facility space by more than 50 percent, which will amount to over 1,200,000 assignable square feet of research room.

Work with World-Renowned Experts: Our Faculty Members--Your Mentors As a graduate student you will have the opportunity to work with and be mentored by professors who are global leaders in their fields. From developing more environmentally friendly energy, to fighting cancer, to creating more efficient, light-speed computers, to much more, Purdue faculty, researchers, and graduate students are engineering the solutions to the most pressing challenges of the 21 st century. To do this better in the college we are increasing the number of faculty in all areas--we've already moved from under 300 faculty members to over 325. That number will grow to 395 by the 2007-08 academic year. This growth is exponentially escalating the educational and research possibilities for the college.

Expectations of Applicants Applicants ordinarily will be expected to hold baccalaureate degrees from colleges or universities of recognized standing prior to registration as graduate students. Applicants for a master's or doctoral degree program should have achieved a 3.0 grade-point index or higher for the baccalaureate degree or have other academic indices of outstanding performance.

School Description:
For over a century the University of Illinois has been a leader in railroad engineering research and education. Beginning with Talbot's fundamental work on railroad track design, and Schmidt & Tuthill's work on train energy and power requirements, through Hay's textbook on railroad engineering, The U of I has a distinguished record of accomplishment and remains highly respected by today's railroad engineering community. As we enter the next century, the tradition of excellence in railroad engineering continues at the U of I. Nearly two dozen researchers are investigating a wide range of questions and applying cutting edge technology to help North American railroads develop solutions to meet the challenges of more efficient, reliable, faster, and profitable operations. Railroads today are transporting more freight than ever in their history, and more than any other transport mode. Meanwhile the nation is poised to begin developing high-speed rail corridors throughout the country, including Illinois. Railroads, and the engineering firms that supply the industry, need talented young engineers to develop and implement the advanced technology that railroads will need in the 21st century. The University of Illinois is committed to helping develop these solutions, and to the education of the next generation of railroad engineering professionals.
