TERRE HAUTE, IND. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology senior Sutton Coleman (Lebanon, Va.) and junior Liz Evans (Bicknell/North Knox) have been chosen to compete in the 2012 NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field National Championships starting Friday at Grinnell College in Iowa.
Both Coleman and Evans have earned the No. 2 national seed in their respective events entering this week's championships. Coleman stands No. 2 nationally in the 60-meter high hurdles with a school record time of 8.07 seconds, while Evans holds the No. 2 spot in the high jump with a leap of 5' 10" that is also a school record and one of the top five Division III marks in NCAA history.
Evans opens the week by competing in the finals of the women's high jump at 4:30 p.m. Central Time on Friday. Coleman will compete in the 60-meter hurdles preliminaries at 5:35 p.m. Central Time on Friday, with the 60-meter hurdles finals scheduled for 3:55 p.m. Central Time on Saturday.
Coleman has recorded four All-American honors in his Rose-Hulman track and field career entering the 2012 Indoor Championships. His finishes include fourth in the outdoor 400-intermediate hurdles (2011), sixth in the indoor 55-meter hurdles in 2011, eighth in the 110-hurdles (2011) and eighth in the outdoor 400-hurdles (2009).
Evans, also a four-time All-American, earned the 2011 NCAA Division III Indoor and Outdoor National Championships in the high jump to become the eighth student-athlete to sweep the NCAA Division III Indoor and Outdoor high jump national titles in the same year.
Evans has two career first-place finishes and two national runner-up honors in four previous appearances in NCAA National Championship meets. She has joined three-time javelin national champion Chris Trapp and two-time pole vault national champion Ryan Loftus as the only multiple national champions in Fightin' Engineer athletic history.
The decorated Rose-Hulman track and field history includes 42 All-American awards, seven individual national championships and seven national runner-up efforts entering the 2012 NCAA Indoor Championships.
