Two School Records Fall at Joe Banks Invitational


225 WmileactionADA, OHIO -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology snapped two school records, and the men's squad finished second in the Joe Banks Indoor Track & Field Invitational at Ohio Northern University on Saturday afternoon.

One men's and one women's school record fell in a meet that included 13 top-three finishes between the two squads.

Senior Ryann-Rebecca Montgomery (Lafayette, La./Episcopal Acadiana) smashed the women's 3,000-meter school record with a performance that including lapping the entire field.  Montgomery ran the first sub 10-minute 3,000-meter indoor run in school history with a mark of 9:59.38.  The mark also currently ranks No. 10 nationally in NCAA Division III.

Senior Nathan Catt (Greenwood/Center Grove) paced the men's squad with a school record performance in the 1,000-meter run.  Catt completed the five laps in a time of 2:32.04.

Junior Blake Schulthies (Dubois/Northeast Dubois) added another running event victory by claiming the 60-meter high hurdles title in a time of 8.63 seconds.

Freshman Charles Spaeth (Hillsboro, Ill.) led the field events and paced a 1-3-4 finish in the men's shot put with a mark of 47' 3 3/4".

Four individuals and one relay team came home with second-place honors for the Fightin' Engineers.  In running events, junior Matthew Billingsley (Moline, Ill./Alleman) was second in the 1,000-meter run (2:34.44) with the fifth fastest time in school history, while senior Philip Koranteng (Sterling, Va./Dominion) earned runner-up honors in the 60-meter high hurdles (8.67 seconds).

Field event runner-ups included freshman Joshua Blome (Casey, Ill./Casey-Westfield) in the pole vault (14' 0") and junior Austin Schulthies (Dubois/Northeast Dubois) in the high jump (6' 4 1/4").

The men's 4-x-200 meter relay team of freshman Adam Wilson (Mecca/Riverton Parke), sophomore Isaiah Smith (Shelbyville), senior Clay Becker (Gaylord, Mich./St. Mary Cathedral) and Kelley also came home second in 1:32.88.

The Fightin' Engineers also combined to tally four third-place finishes.  Senior Andy Hunkeler (Kokomo/Northwestern) recorded two third-place finishes with marks of 51' 6 1/2" in the weight throw and 46' 5 1/4" in the shot put.

In running events, junior Jake Kelley (Tecumseh, Mich.) finished third in the 51.42 seconds, while sophomore Kevin Maurer (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) in the mile run (4:30.32).

Regional power Ohio Northern University won the men's meet, with Rose-Hulman finishing a strong second.  The Fightin' Engineers travel to the DePauw University Invitational next weekend.
