BLOOMINGTON, ILL. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology junior Liz Evans (Bicknell/North Knox) likely qualified for her fifth consecutive trip to the NCAA Division III Indoor Nationals with a historic mark to lead the Engineer effort at Illinois Wesleyan on Saturday.
Evans recorded a high jump leap of 5' 10" that ranks fifth in Division III history. She has earned two NCAA Division III high jump national championships and two national runner-up finishes in four previous trips to the NCAA meet. Her effort currently ranks No. 1 nationally and the top 14 efforts this season will qualify for the Nationals.
Evans earned one of seven first place finishes for the Fightin' Engineer men's and women's teams in a four-team event that featured Illinois College, Illinois Wesleyan, Rose-Hulman and Washington University.
Senior Sutton Coleman (Lebanon, Va.) led the men's effort that with a second-place finish in the 55-meter high hurdles in a time of 7.68 seconds. The time would have been in the NCAA provisional qualification range in 2011.
Individual winners for the men's squad included junior Collin Crowson (Dublin, Ohio/Jerome) with a career-best pole vault mark of 15' 5"; senior Jeremiah Edwards (Indianapolis/Lawrence North) with a time of 6.59 seconds in the 55-meter dash; senior P.J. Schulthies (Duois/Northeast Dubois) with a shot put toss of 44' 11"; and freshman Stuart West (La Porte) with a mile run time of 4:23.80 that stands fifth in Rose-Hulman history.
On the women's side, junior Creasy Clauser (Crawfordsville/Southmont) joined Evans as an event winner with a 400-meter time of 1:02.89.
Rose-Hulman also captured the men's 4-x-400 meter relay with a time of 3:27.36. The team featured junior Brent Austgen (Cedar Lake/Hanover Central), junior Tyler Hannan (Winchester, Ky./George Rogers Clark); junior Travis Stallings (Cincinnati, Ohio/Colerain) and Coleman.
Joining Coleman with runner-up performances on the men's side were senior Micah Aldrich (Indianapolis/Warren Central) with a 3,000-meter time of 8:49.58; Hannan with a 400-meter dash time of 51.36 seconds; sophomore Garrett Payne (Monbelview, Texas/Barbers Hill) with a shot put toss of 44' 8 1/4". Stallings added a pair of runner-up performances with leaps of 21' 1 1/4" in the long jump and 41' 5 1/4" in the triple jump.
Third-place finishers included Clauser with a women's high jump mark of 5' 3"; junior Chris Good (Bloomington/Edgewood) with a men's high jump mark of 6' 0 3/4"; junior Greg Larmore (Deerfield, Ill.) with a weight throw toss of 48' 3 1/2"; and sophomore Charles Phillips (Batavia, Ill.) with a 600-meter run time of 1:24.92.
The women's 4-x-400 meter relay team of Clauser, junior Abby Sowers (Delaware, Ohio/Bishop Watterson), freshman Jessica Waldren (Indianapolis/Ben Davis) and Evans also came home third in a time of 4:22.98.
In addition, junior Gloria Boxell (Zionsville/Covenant Christian) added a school record performance with a women's 55-meter high hurdles time of 9.22 seconds.
Rose-Hulman opens the 2012 home season with the Friday Night Invitational this weekend at the Sports and Recreation Center. The Jan. 20 event begins with field events at 6 p.m. and running events at 6:30.
