LAFAYETTE, IND. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology freshman
Orion Martin (Dublin, Ohio/Coffman) won the
100-butterfly and recorded two individual top-five finishes against
primarily Division I competition to lead the Fightin' Engineers at
Purdue on Saturday.
Martin recorded a winning time of 50.09 seconds in the 100-butterfly to top a field of swimmers from Purdue, IUPUI, Indianapolis, DePauw and Wabash. The time ranks second in Rose-Hulman history in the event.
Martin also contributed a fourth-place finish in the 50-freestyle with a 21.48 second mark that ranks fourth in Fightin' Engineer history.
Martin's efforts helped Rose-Hulman record four top-five finishes on the day. The 200-medley relay team of senior John Huster (Terre Haute/North), junior Andrew Podgorski (Goshen), senior Matt Ross (West Lafayette/Harrison) and Martin placed fifth in 1:38.41.
Two individuals recorded eighth-place finishes to bolster the men's effort. Huster placed eighth in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 53.01 seconds. Freshman Tai Enrico (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota East) added an eighth-place in the 200-individual medley with a time of 2:02.99.
Senior Shannon Cunnien (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's) led the women's performance with a ninth-place in the 500-freestyle (5:46.82). Senior Nicole Richardson (Janesville, Wis./George Parker) added a ninth-place in three-meter diving (174.45 points).
Rose-Hulman opens the 2012-13 home swimming and diving schedule with a dual match against Millikin University on Friday night.
