GAME ONE BOX; GAME TWO BOX

Widmoyer2TERRE HAUTE, IND. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology split their softball doubleheader with Blackburn College on Sunday.

The Engineers won game one 4-3 before falling in the nightcap 5-3.

Sophomore Brianne Widmoyer (Elkhart, Ind./Central) beat out a throw from third base on the game winning single, scoring sophomore Kayla Irwin (Farmersburg, Ind./North Central) in the process.

Widmoyer had two hits on the day with the game winning run batted in and also scored once.  Freshmen Jenna Martinek (Troy, Mo./Buchanan) and Mary Schultz (Harrison, Ohio) also had two hits, while Martinek led the team with two RBI's.

The Engineers took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning off a Widmoyer run.  Blackburn answered right back with a run in the second.  Rose-Hulman then took a 3-1 lead after a Martinek double scored Schultz and senior Molly Richardson (Orange Park, Fla./St. Johns Central Day) in their third inning.

Blackburn tied the game again with a two run sixth inning, sending the game to a 3-3 tie going into the Engineer seventh.  With one out, Schultz singled.  An error by the Blackburn pitcher allowed Schultz to advance to second and put Irwin on first.  Martinek then singled and moved Schultz and Irwin to third and second.  The Engineers faced two outs after Schultz was thrown out at home when Widmoyer hit a groundball down to third base and beat the throw to first, allowing Irwin to score the game-winning run.

Senior Kyla Lutz (Tennyson, Ind./Boonville) recorded her fourth win of the season, recording three strikeouts in the effort.

Lutz led the Engineers in game two  with two hits and one run. Sophomore Alyse Mueller (Belleville, Ill./West)  hit a two run homerun in the fifth inning for her first career home run.  Freshman Allison Bowman (Fort Wayne, Ind./Snider)  contributed with one RBI.
