TERRE HAUTE, IND. -- Rose-Hulman
Institute of Technology split their softball doubleheader with
Blackburn College on Sunday.
The Engineers won game
one 4-3 before falling in the nightcap 5-3.
Sophomore Brianne Widmoyer (Elkhart,
Ind./Central) beat out a throw from third
base on the game winning single, scoring sophomore
Kayla Irwin (Farmersburg, Ind./North
Central) in the process.
Widmoyer had two hits on the day with the game winning run
batted in and also scored once. Freshmen Jenna
Martinek (Troy, Mo./Buchanan) and Mary
Schultz (Harrison, Ohio) also had two
hits, while Martinek led the team with two RBI's.
The Engineers took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning
off a Widmoyer run. Blackburn answered right back with a
run in the second. Rose-Hulman then took a 3-1 lead after a
Martinek double scored Schultz and senior Molly Richardson
(Orange Park, Fla./St. Johns Central Day) in their
Blackburn tied the game again with a two run sixth inning,
sending the game to a 3-3 tie going into the Engineer
seventh. With one out, Schultz singled. An error by the
Blackburn pitcher allowed Schultz to advance to second and put
Irwin on first. Martinek then singled and moved Schultz and
Irwin to third and second. The Engineers faced two outs after
Schultz was thrown out at home when Widmoyer hit a groundball
down to third base and beat the throw to first, allowing
Irwin to score the game-winning run.
Senior Kyla Lutz (Tennyson,
Ind./Boonville) recorded her fourth win of the
season, recording three strikeouts in the effort.
Lutz led the Engineers in game two with two hits and
one run. Sophomore Alyse Mueller (Belleville,
Ill./West) hit a two run homerun in the fifth inning
for her first career home run. Freshman Allison
Bowman (Fort Wayne, Ind./Snider) contributed with
Rose-Hulman returns to HCAC action Tuesday as they travel to
conference rival Anderson University.
