TERRE HAUTE, IND. -- Rose-Hulman
Institute of Technology improved to 7-9 on the softball season with
a 3-2 and 7-3 doubleheader sweep over Spalding University on Sunday
at the Engineer Softball Field.
Senior Kyla Lutz (Tennyson/Boonville) (pictured) led the Engineers with a two-run home run and a complete game effort in the circle in game one. Lutz recorded all three RBIs and scattered eight hits with three strikeouts to move to 3-3 on the season.
Freshman Jenna Martinek (Troy, Mo./Buchanan) slapped two singles, and sophomore Alyse Mueller (Belleville, Ill./West) singled and scored once to provide offensive depth.
In the nightcap, sophomore Brianne Widmoyer (Elkhart/Central) tossed a complete-game five-hitter with six strikeouts to improve her record to 2-2 in the circle.
Offensively, Martinek again had two singles and scored two runs for the Engineers. Senior Allison Faber (St. Louis, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy) blasted a two-run home run, while senior Kayla Yano (Ontario, Ore.) added a double and two RBIs. Freshman Mary Schultz (Harrison, Ohio) and Lutz each added one hit and one run scored.
Rose-Hulman improved to 7-9 overall, while Spalding dropped to 4-4. The Engineers return to action at Transylvania University next Saturday.
