TERRE HAUTE, IND. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology junior Carly Heibel (Fort Wayne/Lakewood Park Christian) has been named Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Softball Hitter of the Week after a strong performance over six games last week.
The versatile Heibel earned her third weekly conference honor of the 2014 season. The software engineering major has previously been named Conference Pitcher of the Week on two occasions this spring.
Heibel has a monster week at the plate, finishing the week 13-for-21 (.619) with five runs scored, five doubles, one home run, seven RBI, and a 1.000 slugging percentage. The effort improved her season batting average to .330 with team-high totals of 10 doubles and five home runs.
Heibel holds Rose-Hulman's career school record with 14 home runs. She also ranks among the school's career leaders in doubles (3rd with 32), batting average (4th at .373), hits (6th with 131) and RBIs (63).
As a pitcher, Heibel ranks second in the HCAC in earned run average (1.83) and fourth in wins (11). She stands 11-4 overall with two shutouts, 11 complete games and 43 strikeouts in 107.1 innings of work this season. Heibel also ranks fourth in school history with 19 career pitching wins, fourth with three shutouts and fifth with 126 strikeouts.
Rose-Hulman has earned the No. 3 seed for this week's HCAC Tournament and faces Bluffton University in the opener on Friday at 10 a.m. The double elimination tournament continues on Friday and Saturday. The Fightin' Engineers finished the regular season 18-14 overall and are in postseason play for the first time since 2008.
