ST. MARY-OF-THE-WOODS, IND. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology topped crosstown rival St. Mary-of-the-Woods 4-1 in women's soccer action on Wednesday.
The Fightin' Engineers scored three times in the first 29 minutes and outshot The Woods 28-7 to earn their seventh consecutive win in the crosstown series.
Sophomore Rachel Johnstone (Loveland, Ohio) scored in the 12th minute on a double assist from freshman Nicky Wheeler (Avon) and senior Anna Vogel (East Greenwich, R.I./LaSalle Academy) to put the Engineers on the board.
Rose-Hulman pushed its lead to 2-0 just 2:31 later when senior Carolyn Guzik (Avon, Ohio/Padua Franciscan) found the back of the net on a pass from Vogel.
The lead reached 3-0 on a score by freshman Haley O'Neil (Batavia, Ill.) on an assist from Wheeler in the 29th minute. St. Mary-of-the-Woods answered with an unassisted goal by Jessica Black at 37:00.
Rose-Hulman scored the final tally of the match in the 59th minute on an unassisted goal from sophomore Cassie Cox (Louisville, Ky./Manual).
The Engineers controlled the tempo with six corner kicks and four goalkeepers earned playing time in the victory. Senior Julie Brennan (Indianapolis/Pike) was credited with the victory by starting the game and leaving with the lead.
Vogel and senior Molly Rice (Marion/Oak Hill) led Rose-Hulman with four shots, while Black paced the Pomeroys with four shots.
Rose-Hulman improved to 4-7 overall, while St. Mary-of-the-Woods stands 0-7. The Fightin' Engineers travel to Hanover on Saturday.
