TERRE HAUTE, IND. -- The Rose-Hulman women's soccer team has been selected to finish fourth in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference this season, in a preseason poll of league coaches released Tuesday.
Rose-Hulman recorded its best season since 2008 with a 9-7-3 mark last fall. The Fightin' Engineers finished 4-3-2 in conference play, and return 10 starters and 15 letter winners to the program this season.
The squad also returns two all-region selections for the first time in program history. Sophomore goalkeeper Lucinda Combs (Danville, Ky./Boyle County) and senior forward Nicky Wheeler (Avon) were honored by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America last fall.
Transylvania University earned the top spot with 98 poll points and eight first-place votes. Hanover College (85) and Earlham College (68) were picked second and third with one first-place vote each.
Rose-Hulman earned the fourth selection with 65 points, followed by Defiance (57), Manchester (54) and Franklin (52) in a tight contest for fifth through seventh. Mount St. Joseph (31), Bluffton (27) and Anderson (13) round out the poll.
The 2013 Fightin' Engineer women's soccer team includes 20 players from 10 states and will arrive on campus later this week.
The team opens the regular season schedule with the Rose-Hulman Invitational on August 30-31.
