IND. -- The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology women's soccer team
scored twice in the first half to top crosstown rival St.
Mary-of-the-Woods 3-0 in women's soccer action on Wednesday
night.
Freshman Hayley Gilliam (Zionsville) scored the final two goals to lead the offensive effort. Freshman Katie DeMoss (Martinsville/Roncalli) added the game winner for the Engineers.
Freshman Lucinda Combs (Danville, Ky./Boyle County) earned her fifth shutout of the season with one save.
Rose-Hulman outshot the Pomeroys 20-3 in the contest and had a 7-1 edge in corner kicks. Amanda Payton led the St. Mary-of-the-Woods effort with 12 saves to keep the Pomeroys within striking distance.
Rose-Hulman opened the scoring in the 12th minute on a score by DeMoss, courtesy of a pass from freshman Mallory McDevitt (Wapakoneta, Ohio).
Gilliam put the Engineers ahead 2-0 at the half, on a pass from senior Amy Schleter (Knoxville, Tenn./Karns).
The two teams battled with a 2-0 score until the 82nd minute, when Gilliam added an insurance goal to secure Rose-Hulman's fifth win of the year. Junior Amanda Kingman (Plano, Texas/Senior) was credited with the assist.
DeMoss had five shots to lead the Rose-Hulman offense. Sophomore Becca Evans (Tinley Park, Ill./Victor Andrew) added four shots, with Gilliam firing three.
Rose-Hulman improved to 5-4-1 on the season, while St. Mary-of-the-Woods stands 1-5. The Fightin' Engineers host Bluffton University in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference opener on Saturday at 1 p.m.
