TERRE HAUTE, IND. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology freshman goalkeeper Lucinda Combs (Danville, Ky./Boyle County) tied a school record with 18 saves, but nationally regarded Centre College scored in the final minute to earn a hard fought 2-1 women's soccer win on Sunday.
Combs, playing against a Centre team located in her Kentucky hometown of Danville, tied a school record with 18 saves in the match. Her effort ties the mark of Heidi Brackmann in 1999 and Julie Brennan in 2011.
Centre, which defeated No. 13 ranked Case Western Reserve 3-0 on Saturday, controlled play for much of the match with a 25-2 shots edge. Combs kept the Engineers in striking distance with nine saves in each half.
Centre opened the scoring in the 27th minute on an own goal. Rose-Hulman knotted the score at 1-1 with a penalty kick in the 35th minute. Freshman Katie DeMoss (Martinsville/Roncalli) hammered home the kick for her second goal of the year.
The two teams battled for the next 55 minutes until the last minute of regulation, when Mary Taylor Kersey scored the game winner to lift Centre to its fourth straight win to open the season.
Rose-Hulman stands 2-3 on the season and returns to action on Wednesday at Webster University.
