HAUTE, IND. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology freshman
goalkeeper Lucinda Combs (Danville, Ky./Boyle
County) tied a school record with 18 saves, but nationally
regarded Centre College scored in the final minute to earn a hard
fought 2-1 women's soccer win on Sunday.
Combs, playing against a Centre team located in her
Kentucky hometown of Danville, tied a school record with 18
saves in the match. Her effort ties the mark of Heidi
Brackmann in 1999 and Julie Brennan in 2011.
Centre, which defeated No. 13 ranked Case Western Reserve 3-0 on
Saturday, controlled play for much of the match with a 25-2 shots
edge. Combs kept the Engineers in striking distance with nine
saves in each half.
Centre opened the scoring in the 27th minute on an own
goal. Rose-Hulman knotted the score at 1-1 with a penalty
kick in the 35th minute. Freshman Katie DeMoss
(Martinsville/Roncalli) hammered home the kick for her
second goal of the year.
The two teams battled for the next 55 minutes until the last
minute of regulation, when Mary Taylor Kersey scored the game
winner to lift Centre to its fourth straight win to open the
Rose-Hulman stands 2-3 on the season and returns to action on
Wednesday at Webster University.
