TERRE HAUTE, IND. -- Centre College withstood a
late charge from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology to earn a 2-1
men's soccer victory on Sunday at Jim Rendel Field.
The two teams battled to a scoreless draw for the first 72
minutes, before the Colonels were awarded a penalty kick.
Josh Settle booted home the kick to give Centre a 1-0 lead.
Centre added a second score in the 87th minute, when Ryan Garvey
booted home a blast on a pass from Jack Goblirsch.
Less than a minute later, Rose-Hulman was awarded a penalty kick
after another violation in the box. Junior William
Senat (Edmond, Okla.) blasted home the kick to bring the
score within 2-1.
The Fightin' Engineers made two pushes in the final three
minutes, but Centre held on for the victory.
Centre outshot Rose-Hulman 12-6 in the contest,
with sophomore Drew Miller (Cincinnati, Ohio/Bishop
Fenwick) recording four saves. Senat paced the
offensive effort with three shots.
Centre improved to 6-2 on the season, while Rose-Hulman stands
4-4-2. The Fightin' Engineers host Bluffton in the Heartland
Collegiate Athletic Conference opener on Saturday.
