REUS, SPAIN -- The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology football team relied on a complete team effort to defeat a Spanish National All-Star Team 72-0, highlighting the Fightin' Engineer trip to Spain on Sunday.
The balanced Rose-Hulman performance featured consistent offense, two defensive touchdowns, one special teams safety and a shutout on defense. The matchup served as a cap to the team's eight-day trip to Barcelona.
The scoring started early, when Zac Erba (Winona Lake, Ind./Warsaw) blocked a punt through the back of the endzone for a safety, putting Rose-Hulman ahead 2-0.
The first quarter included two offensive touchdowns to put the Fightin' Engineers ahead 16-0. Brian Soller (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli) scored on a nine-yard touchdown run that included an extra point by Matt Angel (Cassville, Mo.). The next drive started with a fumble recovery by Kyle Brewer (West Point, Ind./McCutcheon) that led to a 12-yard touchdown pass from Austin Swenson (Wauconda, Ill./Wauconda) to Jordan Patterson (Columbus, Ind./East).
In the second quarter, Rose-Hulman exploded for 28 points to take a 44-0 lead at the half. Colton Motz (Wadesville, Ind./North Posey) connected on a 12-yard touchdown pass to Luke Kopecky (Hood Rive, Ore./Hood River Valley), with a Craig Larew (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence North) extra point pushing the lead to 23-0.
T.J. Chin (Morehead, Ky./Rowan County) then snagged the first of his two interception returns for touchdowns on the day to make the score 30-0. Chin scampered 35 yards for a touchdown, capped by another Larew extra point.
The second quarter scoring continued with Koby Close (Buena Vista, Colo.) reaching paydirt on a nine-yard touchdown run. Soller authored the final score of the first half, connecting with Zach Silva (Albuqueque, N.M./La Cueva) on a 45-yard touchdown pass to increase the margin to 44-0 at the intermission.
The lead reached 51-0 in the third quarter on Chin's second interception return for a touchdown on the day, this time from 38 yards. Close scored the third quarter's offensive touchdown on a three-yard run. The margin reached 58-0 after three quarters courtesy of the two extra points from Clark Schultz (Westfield, Ill./Casey-Westfield).
In the fourth quarter, Ryan Landwehr (Tipp City, Ohio/Tippecanoe) added another touchdown on a one-yard scoring run to push the lead to 65-0 after an Angel extra point. Jacob Sexton (Findlay, Ohio/Van Buren) capped the scoring with a 50-yard touchdown run, followed by a Schultz extra point.
The trip also included numerous tours within the nation of Spain. Stops included Paque Guell, Montjuic Hill, Tarragona, Salou, and a trip to the Costa Dorada coast in a private catamaran.
The Spanish All-Star Team consisted of several of the nation's best players from Barcelona, Valencia, Zaragoza and Madrid. Rose-Hulman will return from Spain early this week.
