TERRE HAUTE, IND. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology football head coach Jeff Sokol has announced four players as team captains for the upcoming 2013 season.
Seniors Kie Bates (Indianapolis/Ben Davis), T.J. Chin (Morehead, Ky./Rowan County), Connor Gerhart (La Mesa, Calif./La Jolla Country Day) and Dean Griffing (Plano, Ill./Aurora Christian) will represent the Fightin' Engineers as team captains next fall.
Bates has started for two years on the Rose-Hulman offensive line after earning starting roles at multiple positions as a freshman. The mechanical engineering major's blocks helped Kyle Kovach become the all-time leader in rushing yards at Rose-Hulman, and Bates captured honorable mention all-league accolades for his efforts in 2012.
Chin returns after suffering a season ending injury in the second game last season at Centre. The civil engineering major tallied 10 tackles in five quarters last season, after totaling 14 tackles as a sophomore in 2011.
Gerhart ranked third on the Engineers in receptions (31) and receiving yards (300) last season. The civil engineering major caught a career-high eight passes for 65 yards at Mount St. Joseph, including a fourth quarter touchdown that helped Rose-Hulman earn a 28-21 overtime victory.
Griffing placed second in the HCAC in tackles-for-loss (16) and sacks (10) and finished with 52 tackles in 2012. The mechanical engineering major was also named HCAC Player of the Week for his efforts against Mount St. Joseph that included 14 tackles and 4.5 tackles-for-loss. He was a first-team all-HCAC selection in 2012 after earning honorable mention all-league accolades in 2011.
Rose-Hulman completed its eighth consecutive season at .500 or above in 2012 and placed fourth in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference standings. The Fightin' Engineers open the 2013 season at Kalamazoo College on Saturday September 7.
